Press Release
KUALA LUMPUR, 23 September 2014: Malaysia’s upcoming financial and business district Tun Razak Exchange (“TRX”) today announced the signing of a 20-year concession agreement with Veolia Water Technologies Southeast Asia for wastewater treatment and recycled water supply in TRX.
The wastewater treatment plant to be built and operated by Veolia will be a key component of TRX’s sustainability framework, supplying recycled water and cutting water demand by more than 50%.
Infrastructure in TRX is designed to meet global standards of sustainability, and a key focus will be water reuse throughout the development. The global leader in optimized resource management, Veolia aims to recover at least 80% of sewage generated every year, for reuse purposes within TRX, reducing site-wide fresh water demand by half.
1MDB RE Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Haji Azmar Talib said “TRX is committed to sustainability and we are proud to undertake this with a strong, reputable partner. This is in line with efforts to improve treatment practices for waste water towards achieving the Greater KL goals which the Government has outlined.”
He added, “This partnership with Veolia is a key component in achieving world-class sustainability in Malaysia. It will also be economical for tenants, demonstrating that sustainability doesn’t always have to be expensive.”
The wastewater treatment plant will supply safe, clean and odour-free recycled water for use within the development for district cooling, irrigation and in toilets. It will also create a full cycle system to provide sufficient recycled water for all non-potable water uses within the district.
Mohammed Akhir Ahmad, Managing Director of Veolia, Malaysia, said: “This is another milestone for Veolia as the TRX Project is an affirmation of our leading position in the water industry.”
“In line with TRX’s objective to establish a state-of-the-art green business district, Veolia has carefully put together wastewater solutions such as Alizair® which is ecological in nature. We are enthusiastic to kick start the project and work alongside a likeminded partner. Veolia is proud to support the TRX Project with our proprietary technologies.”
Veolia’s knowledge and expertise in handling wastewater treatment for projects of similar scale was one of the most compelling reasons for its selection. The company has delivered water solutions for Thames Water in the UK, Darling Harbor in Sydney and the Shanghai Pudong district.
The treatment plant will be operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and will offer numerous benefits to the TRX Project in terms of environmental sustainability and water reuse. Five key technologies from Veolia will be featured in the plant, namely Endetec Kapta, the Multiflo™ settler, AnoxKaldnes™ Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology, Hydrotech® disc filters and Alizair® deodorization treatment.
TRX is currently on target to receive LEED recognition for Neighborhood Development at Gold and a GBI Township Platinum certification.
LEED is an internationally recognised green building certification programme with a rating system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings. GBI is Malaysia’s green rating tool that is designed specifically for the tropical climate and Malaysia’s current social, infrastructure and economic landscape.
