KUALA LUMPUR, 23 February 2012: A global design competition is underway to pick the best of architectural designs for a Signature Tower in the Kuala Lumpur International Financial District (KLIFD).

The Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) is organising the competition under the auspices of the International Union of Architects (UIA).

The competition will seek the best architectural solutions that reflect the aspirations for the Signature Tower to serve as the centerpiece building, sited on a prime location within KLIFD.

It aims to attract collaboration between local and world-renowned architects to reap cutting edge innovation and creativity on a global level in designing the Signature Tower for KLIFD.

The participation of PAM and UIA as organisers will ensure that the competition is governed by the best global practices, employing rigorous processes that mirror 1MDB’s very own stringent procedures.

1MDB Real Estate Sdn Bhd (1MDB RE) Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Operations) Dato’ Azmar Talib said: “We are delighted that PAM has joined us in this economic transformation initiative to build the KLIFD for the world.”

“As a national project, we strive for an inclusive people participation in the development of KLIFD. We also believe the world can contribute to KLIFD truly becoming a world-class financial centre. This is the fusion of local and global talent we seek at every step of the way,” he said.

PAM President, Ar. Hj. Saifuddin Ahmad, said: “We are happy to assist. It is PAM’s objective to assist and advise on the development of property, town planning, built environment design and construction of buildings generally.”

Ar. Hj Saifuddin added: “The competition is in compliance with the International Regulations approved by all UNESCO member states. PAM promotes design excellence through international competitions and encourages more developers to emulate 1MDB to achieve world class standards.”

The competition is open to architects worldwide and PAM is inviting all PAM Corporate Members to participate in the PAM + UIA + 1MDB International Design Competition for KLIFD Signature Tower Project, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Under pre-qualification stage 1, all PAM Corporate Members are invited to submit pre-qualification documents no later than 4.00pm on Thursday 22 March 2012.

A minimum of 12 teams will be selected by a panel of assessors and they will be invited to participate in the international design competition. The selected teams will be announced on 5 April 2012 and they must submit their entries by 24 May 2012.

The Stage 1 criteria for selection are: organisation capability statement; qualifications of key personnel and team organisation; experiences of firm or firms in collaboration; similar related past and current projects especially on signature/landmark towers; and international and national winning projects and awards received.

The selected teams will receive an honorarium of US$25,000 on submission of a bona fide entry.

In the final stage, an international jury of seven members will then select five winning schemes, each of which will be awarded US$50,000.

After the announcement of results and award of prizes, 1MDB RE, as the competition promoter, may invite the winners to present their projects in person with a view to selecting the team that will realise the project.
